Lawmakers question secret utility rate hikes

New York lawmakers are scrutinizing the hidden process behind energy rate hikes, where utilities often control closed-door negotiations, The Ithaca Voice reports. Consumer advocates say the current system leaves the public in the dark while utilities shape outcomes with little oversight.

At a state Senate hearing, critics called for reforms to bring transparency back to “rate cases”—lengthy proceedings that determine your energy bill. Proposals ranged from making negotiations public to putting judges back at the center of the process.

Senators hinted that new legislation could come as early as January to curb utility influence and protect consumers.
