Bills survive upset scare, defeat Dolphins to start season 3-0 (full coverage)

The Buffalo Bills stayed perfect Thursday night, riding Josh Allen’s three touchdown passes and a late takeaway by Terrel Bernard to a 31-21 victory over the Miami Dolphins at Highmark Stadium. The win pushed Buffalo to 3-0 and extended its dominance over Miami to 14 wins in the past 15 meetings, including seven straight overall.

Allen completed 22-of-28 passes for 213 yards, improving to 14-2 in his career against Miami. He connected with Dalton Kincaid for a 20-yard score, rookie Jackson Hawes on a 5-yard strike, and Khalil Shakir on a 15-yard go-ahead touchdown with 7:17 remaining. James Cook powered the ground game with 108 yards on 19 carries, including a two-yard score early in the third quarter.

Buffalo’s defense delivered the decisive moment with 3:02 left. Protecting a 28-21 lead, Bernard jumped a Tua Tagovailoa pass at the Bills’ 21 to halt Miami’s best chance to tie. Matt Prater then drilled a 48-yard field goal to make it a two-score game after missing from 39 yards earlier.

Penalties also swung the game Buffalo’s way: a roughing-the-punter call extended the Bills’ fourth-quarter drive that led to Shakir’s touchdown.
