New York ranked among top 20 happiest states in new study

New Yorkers have more to smile about this year—at least according to a new national ranking from WalletHub.

The personal finance website released its 2025 Happiest States in America report this week, placing New York at 16th overall, well above the national average.

The study measured 30 key indicators of happiness, including mental health, job satisfaction, income growth, and community engagement. The Empire State ranked especially high in areas tied to mental wellness and life balance:

  • 3rd lowest percentage of depressed adults
  • 2nd lowest suicide rate
  • 5th in number of work hours (suggesting a better work-life balance)

New York landed mid-pack in other categories, including income growth (27th), safety (24th), and separation/divorce rate (22nd).

More than just money

While financial stability is a factor, WalletHub’s experts emphasized that happiness is a mix of personal fulfillment, health, and social connection—not just salary figures.

“Money helps reduce stress, but it’s not the sole driver of happiness,” said Dr. Alicia Walker of Missouri State University. “Once our basic needs are covered, it’s our relationships, meaningful work, and sense of purpose that matter most.”

Other experts agreed, noting that location plays a role—especially when it aligns with someone’s values, community ties, and lifestyle preferences.

Hawaii tops the list, but New York holds strong

Hawaii ranked No. 1 overall, credited for its low depression rate, strong public health, and long life expectancy. Still, New York’s strong mental health indicators and lower rates of extreme stress helped it climb into the top 20.
