The New York Yankees’ seven-game win streak ended Sunday with a 3-2 loss to the Chicago White Sox in the series finale at Rate Field.
New York led 1-0 early and 2-1 after five innings, but could not hold either lead or add to it as Chicago avoided the four-game sweep.
Aaron Judge provided an early spark, homering in the first inning for his second straight game. The solo shot, his 43rd of the season, tied him with Yogi Berra for fifth on the franchise’s all-time homer list at 358. Judge added two more hits, a double and a single, finishing 3-for-5 in another strong effort. But New York managed just six hits overall.
Starter Luis Gil gave the Yankees 5.1 solid innings, striking out seven while allowing two runs on four hits. His biggest mistake was a sixth-inning home run to Colson Montgomery that evened the score at two.
The decisive blow came in the eighth when reliever Tim Hill surrendered a two-out solo shot to Lenyn Sosa, giving Chicago its first lead.
The loss left New York three games behind Toronto in the American League East race.

After an off day on Monday, the Yankees (76-61) head to Houston to open a three-game series against the AL West-leading Astros. Left-hander Max Fried (14-5, 3.06 ERA) will take the ball in Tuesday’s series opener at 8:10 p.m.
