Families and commuters in Canandaigua should expect delays this fall as construction on North Road continues into the school year.

Town officials say the project, paired with back-to-school traffic, will create heavier congestion near Canandaigua Academy and surrounding areas.
North Road is closed approaching the high school. Drivers must use a detour via County Road 28 → Emerson Road → Sandhill Road → North Road — a route that adds pressure to already busy drop-off zones like Sandhill Road and Chapel Street.
“We recognize this will be an inconvenience,” said Town Supervisor Jared Simpson, “but these infrastructure improvements are necessary and will benefit our community long-term.”
To help ease the gridlock, the town suggests families:
- Have students ride the bus when possible
- Carpool with neighbors or friends
- Use alternate drop-off spots like Sonnenberg Park (for middle schoolers) and Northeast Park (for Academy students)
- Give school buses the right of way to stay on schedule
The Town of Canandaigua is working with the city, school district, and Canandaigua Police Department to manage traffic and keep school zones safe.
Residents are encouraged to allow extra travel time, stay alert near schools, and remain patient as students return to class.
