Direct deposit stimulus payment October 2025: Fact check

Stack of unclaimed U.S. Treasury stimulus checks on a desk at a busy IRS office in Washington, D.C., with employees working in the background.

Confused by headlines about $1,700 direct deposits landing in October? You’re not alone—but here’s the truth: there is no new federal stimulus payment hitting bank accounts next month. The widely shared reports refer to Alaska’s Permanent Fund Dividend (PFD), which only applies to eligible residents of that state.

What’s actually happening in October?

Starting October 2, 2025, Alaska will begin distributing Permanent Fund Dividend (PFD) payments of up to $1,702. These payments:

  • Are not federal stimulus checks
  • Only go to residents of Alaska
  • Are funded by the state’s oil revenue, not federal COVID-era programs

More than 600,000 Alaskans are expected to receive this year’s payout.

Who is eligible for these payments?

To receive a 2025 Alaska PFD payment, you must:

  • Be a legal resident of Alaska
  • Have lived in Alaska for at least 72 consecutive hours in each of the past two years
  • Not claim residency in any other state
  • Have filed a valid application by March 31, 2025
  • Not have certain felony convictions

Those who qualified and chose direct deposit will receive funds October 2. Paper checks will be mailed starting October 23.

Is this a new federal stimulus check?

No. There is no federal stimulus program currently issuing checks in October 2025. The last round of nationwide economic impact payments (EIPs), often called stimulus checks, came during the COVID-19 pandemic and ended years ago.

While some headlines mention “Americans getting checks,” the payout is limited to Alaska residents via the PFD program.

Why the confusion?

Some viral posts and articles have used vague or misleading language—saying “Americans to get checks” or “direct deposit payments start October 2”—without clarifying the payments are state-based, not national.

It’s important to check:

  • The source of the news
  • Whether it applies nationally or only to a specific state
  • Official government websites for updates

Will any states issue stimulus checks this fall?

As of now, no states other than Alaska have announced new stimulus-style payments for October 2025. However, some local relief programs or tax rebates could still be active in specific states—typically based on income, residency, or energy cost support.

If you’re not in Alaska and haven’t applied for a specific rebate program, you’re not getting a check next month.
