Looking for fun? You don’t have to leave New York.
According to a new report from WalletHub, New York is the 5th most fun state in the U.S. for 2025—ranking high in everything from restaurants and movie theaters to performing arts and amusement parks.
WalletHub compared all 50 states across 26 key metrics, including access to entertainment, nightlife, recreational opportunities, and affordability. New York landed in the top 5 overall, and scored:
- 1st in restaurants per capita
- 1st in performing-arts theaters per capita
- 3rd in movie theaters per capita
- 4th in golf courses and country clubs per capita
- 4th in fitness centers per capita
- 9th in amusement parks per capita
The study highlights how diverse attractions—combined with strong cultural and recreational infrastructure—make New York a top destination for both residents and travelers.
“Living in one of the most fun states can boost your mental, physical and emotional health,” said WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo. “It gives people a wide range of options for enjoying life—indoors and out.”
WalletHub’s annual rankings often reflect both the quantity and quality of things to do, from state parks and nightlife to budget-friendly attractions. This year’s report arrives as 82% of Americans are planning to take a summer trip, many of them looking for local getaways that pack in the most fun.
