Farmington woman charged with welfare fraud after DSS investigation

A Farmington woman was arrested Tuesday following an investigation that uncovered thousands of dollars in improperly obtained public assistance benefits, according to Ontario County authorities.

Jennifer Koehler, 34, was taken into custody at the Ontario County Jail on June 24. She faces four counts of offering a false instrument for filing in the first degree, along with charges of third-degree welfare fraud and third-degree grand larceny.

The charges stem from a referral by the Ontario County Department of Social Services, which triggered an investigation into Koehler’s benefits applications. Investigators say she failed to report that her husband was living with her and did not disclose his income on documents submitted to DSS.

As a result, Koehler received $17,811 in benefits that she would not have qualified for had she disclosed her full household income, authorities said.

She was arraigned in Ontario County CAP Court on June 24 and released on her own recognizance. She is scheduled to appear in Hopewell Town Court at a later date.
