PFAS contamination threatens Finger Lakes water sources

PFAS “forever chemicals” pose a growing risk to drinking water in New York’s Finger Lakes region, according to a feature published this week in The Citizen.

Elevated PFAS levels have been detected in Seneca Lake and creeks near the former Seneca Army Depot, sparking health and environmental concerns. Contamination has also been found in foam samples from Canandaigua Lake, with PFAS concentrations far exceeding normal levels.

Local, state, and federal agencies are addressing the issue through regulations and cleanup efforts, though challenges remain.

Ongoing community and regulatory initiatives aim to mitigate the long-term impact on the region’s water and agriculture.
