Hochul talks free community college plan part of 2025 proposal

Governor Kathy Hochul announced a plan to offer free tuition, fees, books, and supplies at New York State public community colleges for adults aged 25 to 55 pursuing degrees in high-demand fields like nursing, technology, and engineering. This initiative, part of her 2025 State of the State, aims to expand workforce development and fill critical job vacancies.

The proposal supports industries like semiconductor manufacturing, with Onondaga Community College playing a key role through programs tied to Micron’s $100 billion investment in upstate New York. Enrollment in workforce programs at the college has surged, reflecting demand for skilled workers.

The initiative bolsters efforts to transform New York into a national hub for innovation and economic growth.
