Push for wine in NY grocery stores faces opposition

As momentum grows for allowing wine sales in New York grocery stores, Gov. Kathy Hochul excluded the proposal from her budget. Seventy-five percent of New Yorkers support the change, citing convenience and economic benefits, according to a Siena poll.

A key proposal by Senator Liz Krueger includes annual fees for grocers and promotes state-made wines.

Advocates argue the move would boost state revenue, lower prices, and modernize outdated laws, aligning New York with 40 other states. However, liquor store owners and distributors warn it could devastate small businesses, citing closures in Colorado after similar changes.

Concerns about underage drinking and competition remain strong, continuing bipartisan debate on the issue.
