The Seneca County Sheriff’s Office is alerting residents to a new scam involving fraudulent phone calls from someone claiming to be “Officer Wells” from the Sheriff’s Office.
The caller falsely informs victims that they have missed a federal jury summons and must visit the Sheriff’s Office with identification or risk being taken into custody by the U.S. Marshal’s Service.
Though no money demands were reported, authorities believe the scam aims to manipulate victims into paying to avoid arrest.
The Sheriff’s Office urges residents to report any suspicious calls and reminds the public that they would never request money or handle such matters by phone.
