Gaza cease-fire talks resume amid deepening stalemate

International mediators are launching a new round of cease-fire talks between Israel and Hamas, but the prospects for a breakthrough remain slim as both sides hold firm on key demands.

The indirect negotiations, set to begin Thursday, aim to finalize a deal that could end the 10-month-long conflict and secure the release of roughly 110 hostages held in Gaza. However, the talks have stalled for over two months, with both Israel and Hamas adding new conditions that complicate progress. Israel seeks control over key areas in Gaza and veto power on prisoner releases, while Hamas fears Israel will resume the war once vulnerable hostages are freed.

The situation has been further complicated by the recent assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, widely attributed to Israel, which has heightened tensions and threatened to derail the cease-fire efforts. Despite international pressure, the path to peace remains fraught with obstacles as both sides weigh the risks of continuing the conflict.
