First responders were called to the scene of a major structure fire at a Waterloo staple during the mid-morning hours on Monday.
Reports of a structure fire came in to our newsroom a little before 10 a.m. minutes after firefighters were dispatched to Connie’s Diner on 5&20. It’s the second time in less than four years that the iconic restaurant has had a major structure fire do damage to its building.
Traffic was shut down 5&20 for about an hour as crews from Ontario and Seneca counties responded. The restaurant, which is closed on Mondays, suffered extensive damage to the interior section.
First responders said the fire was contained to the soffit and roof area of the structure. They noted quick response from firefighters ultimately prevented the damage from spreading.
Seneca Falls, Geneva, Border City, Fayette, Clyde, Junius and Oaks Corners fire departments responded to the scene, as well as The Seneca County and Ontario County Fire Coordinators, North Seneca Ambulance, New York State Police, Seneca County Sheriff’s, and Waterloo Police.
