Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente Jr. has asked Governor Kathy Hochul for additional resources to aid in the recovery from the devastating July 16 tornado in Rome. Picente’s letter to the governor emphasized the urgent need for financial assistance to move forward.
While the initial response helped reopen roads, restore power, and provide shelter, Picente noted that long-term recovery efforts, including demolishing unsafe structures, are estimated to cost $25 million. He stressed that this is the county’s top priority.
Picente added that even with FEMA and emergency aid, the funds will not cover all expenses. Costs continue to rise for emergency response, cleanup, and public assistance, with the total impact of the tornado still unknown.
