15 officers injured in separate attacks at Five Points Correctional Facility

  • Staff Report

Two separate inmate attacks at Five Points Correctional Facility resulted in injuries to 15 officers, including 10 who were treated for smoke inhalation after an inmate set a fire inside his cell.

On May 15, an inmate in the Residential Mental Health Unit set a fire using magazines and toilet paper. When an officer tried to extinguish the fire, the inmate blocked the effort with a mattress. The inmate then attacked officers who responded to the fire, biting one and striking another. Nine officers and a sergeant suffered smoke inhalation, and four officers were injured during the struggle. All staff were treated at the facility and remained on duty.

The inmate, serving a one to three year sentence for attempted assault, was subdued and the fire extinguished. He was taken to the infirmary for treatment.

On May 21, another inmate refused to return to his cell after visiting the commissary. When officers tried to handcuff him, he grabbed a sergeant and pulled him into the cell. Officers intervened and subdued the inmate, who is serving a 15-year sentence for manslaughter. The sergeant and four officers sustained injuries but remained on duty after treatment.
