Inmate airlifted to Strong Memorial Hospital after attack at Elmira prison

An inmate at Elmira Correctional Facility was airlifted to Strong Memorial Hospital after being stabbed with an “icepick type” weapon during a fight, according to the New York State Correctional Officers and Police Benevolent Association (NYSCOPBA).


The inmate sustained serious lacerations and puncture wounds to his face, neck, and upper body. The incident began as a fight in the second-floor dayroom, where prison staff witnessed one inmate making multiple slashing motions.

The assailant, who is serving a life sentence for killing a police officer in New York City in 2015, has been identified as the attacker.
