Sheriff gives another update on fatal Cayuga County crash: Identities, likely cause of wreck released

Cayuga County Sheriff Brian Schenck provided another update on the fatal crash that happened in Victory over the holiday weekend. In the latest update, those involved in the wreck were identified, as well as the man who died.

The driver of the tractor trailer, 61-year-old Serhiy Pokhodun from Ontario, Canada, was not injured. The pickup truck’s driver, 44-year-old Kevin Valle, is in stable condition. Passengers Lorena Y. Ibanez-Diaz, 30, and Yosselin M. Ibanez-Diaz, 27, were treated and released. Loida O. Corado-Quinonez, 25, remains in critical condition, while Enoelio S. Cortez-Lajuj, 37, was pronounced dead.

The Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office, along with multiple emergency services, responded to the scene. The investigation is ongoing.

UPDATE: Sheriff says fatal Cayuga County wreck was caused by driver who failed to stop at intersection

Authorities in Cayuga County have provided new information on the fatal wreck that happened around 1:35 p.m. at the intersection of State Route 38 and Route 370 in the Town of Victory.

According to Sheriff Brian Schenck, a southbound pickup truck failed to yield at a stop sign and was struck by an eastbound tractor trailer.

All five occupants of the pickup truck were taken to Upstate University Hospital, where one was pronounced dead. The driver of the tractor trailer was not injured.

Multiple agencies responded to the scene. Further details will be released later.

ORIGINAL REPORT: One dead, others seriously hurt after two-car crash in Cayuga County

First responders were dispatched to a serious two car accident in Victory on Monday afternoon.

The crash involved a tractor-trailer and pickup truck, according to our partners at the Cayuga/Seneca Fire Wire. Sheriff Brian Schenck said one person died and four were injured in the crash.

One person was airlifted by LifeNet. Initially, a second helicopter was requested to the scene, but ultimately not required.

Victory, Cato Rescue, Cimvac, Greater Baldwinsville Ambulance, Port Byron Ambulance, and Fair Haven Ambulance were called to the scene as well.
