Officials: City would use $2M state grant to repurpose former downtown Auburn bank

  • Staff Report

The Auburn City Council is poised to approve an application for a $2 million state grant aimed at revitalizing the former Chemung Canal Trust Company building at 120 Genesee St.

The grant, part of the state’s Restore NY Communities Initiative, would contribute to a $7.3 million project intended to rejuvenate the vacant downtown structure.

A public hearing was held during the council’s Thursday meeting to discuss the application.

Last year, the city’s attempt to secure funding through Restore NY was unsuccessful. The redevelopment plan includes transforming the 36,000-square-foot, six-story building into a mixed-use facility featuring commercial space, 14 market-rate apartments, and a rooftop garden.
