  • Staff Report

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is inviting public comment on the draft Keuka Unit Management Plan. A public meeting will be held on June 27 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Fred and Harriett Taylor Memorial Library, 21 William Street, Hammondsport.

“Public comment is an important part of DEC’s land management process,” said DEC Region 8 Regional Director Tim P. Walsh. “The draft Keuka Unit Management Plan looks at opportunities and accessibility to lands and waters, and we encourage input to help make decisions on managing these lands for public enjoyment and resource protection.”

The Keuka Unit comprises 9,806 acres of public lands in Steuben and Schuyler counties. The draft plan includes improvements for people with disabilities, fish migration enhancements, and land acquisition. Key areas in the plan are Birdseye Hollow State Forest, Cold Brook Wildlife Management Area, Moss Hill State Forest, Mount Washington State Forest, Pigtail Hollow State Forest, Urbana State Forest, and Waneta-Lamoka Wildlife Management Area.

The draft UMP can be reviewed at this link. Comments are accepted until July 31, 2024, and can be mailed to Gretchen Cicora, Supervising Forester, NYSDEC, State Land Management, 7291 Coon Road, Bath, NY 14810, or emailed to [email protected]. Interpreter and translator services are available upon request by June 13, 2024. Contact the DEC Division of Communication, Education, and Engagement for more information.
