Real ID deadline less than one year away now

  • / Updated:
  • Staff Report

New Yorkers have less than a year to update their licenses and identification to meet the Real ID requirements, which will be enforced starting May 7, 2025. Residents will need a Real ID or a valid passport to fly domestically and enter certain federal facilities.

The Real ID, marked with a star in the top right corner, has been issued since 2017 and can also be used to enter federal buildings and military bases. However, it is not valid for crossing into Mexico or Canada. Those with an enhanced driver’s license do not need a Real ID for domestic travel or federal building entry.

To obtain a Real ID, residents must visit a DMV office in person and bring proof of identity, Social Security, date of birth, and two proofs of New York state residence. There is no extra fee for a Real ID, but standard costs for a new license or ID card apply. For more information, visit www.dmv.ny.gov/driver-license/federal-real-id.
