Governor Kathy Hochul announced that flags on state buildings will be flown at half-staff on Monday to honor Vincent “Vinny” Giammarva, a New York State Thruway Authority worker who tragically lost his life in a work zone accident on the Thruway. The incident occurred on May 9th in the Town of Chili, where Giammarva and his colleague, Mark Vera, were struck by a tractor-trailer.

Giammarva was pronounced dead at the scene, while Vera was transported to the hospital with injuries. Governor Hochul expressed deep condolences to the Giammarva family, emphasizing the critical need for driver awareness in work zones to ensure the safety of road workers.

The governor highlighted Giammarva’s 19 years of service with the Thruway Authority and his surviving family members, underscoring the profound impact of his loss on the community and his family.
