The New York Mets (51-62) were unable to build off Monday’s blowout win as they fell 3-2 to the Chicago Cubs (59-55) on Tuesday night at Citi Field.
Pete Alonso crushed his 34th home run in the first inning to give the Mets a 2-0 lead, but the offense went quiet after that, and Chicago scored three unanswered runs to secure the victory.
Carlos Carrasco turned in a solid outing, tossing five innings of two-run ball while walking two and striking out five.
Drew Smith served up what ended up being the winning run in the eighth.
The Mets will hand the ball to David Peterson on Wednesday as they look to win the series. The first pitch is set for 7:10 p.m.
