Calls for action over passport delays grow louder

Republican lawmakers are demanding the Department of State tackle the current backlog of passport services amid the summer travel season.

In a letter addressed to Secretary of State Antony Blinken, the lawmakers described the delays as “completely unacceptable”, adding that these have resulted in higher airline fees, increased vacation costs, and additional charges to expedite applications.

The surge in travel following the easing of most pandemic-related restrictions has led to an overwhelming backlog for processing passport renewals and new applications.
