University of Rochester investigating data breach

  • / Updated:
  • Staff Report

The University of Rochester confirmed it is currently investigating a cybersecurity breach, which it attributed to a software vulnerability in a third-party file transfer product, as stated on its website.

This international breach has impacted the University, along with 2,500 organizations across the globe.

In its statement, the University emphasized its commitment to safeguarding data and privacy, disclosing that its IT staff are working closely with the FBI and an external data forensic firm to determine the extent of the compromised information and any necessary actions.

Although the exact nature and scope of the breach remain unclear, faculty, staff, and students could potentially be affected.

Urgent steps recommended by the University to protect personal information include adopting strong passwords, changing passwords, implementing multi-factor authentication, and regularly checking credit card and bank records. In the event of any suspicious activity, the community is advised to immediately contact their financial institutions and credit monitoring agencies.
