Where is the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program available?

The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is funded by the US Department of Health and Human Services. It aims to assist low-income households who need to use too much of their income to afford energy bills. Additional details can be found here.

LIHEAP provides a one-time payment to eligible households in order to pay a balance on energy bills. The Energy Crisis Intervention Program however, helps in emergency situations. For example, if you receive a 24-48 hour disconnect notice or service termination by your utility company.

LIHEAP provides free efficiency upgrades to low-income households. The upgrades are intended to lower the monthly bill and improve health and safety.

If you’re in California and need assistance paying energy bills, LIHEAP has an online tool to check your eligibility. If you are eligible, you can then send in an application online and hopefully get a payment.
