Millions of Americans have filed their returns with the IRS, but they’re seeing Topic 152 when they check Where’s My Refund.
What does this mean?
Returns began being accepted on Jan. 24, 2022.
You have until April 18, 2022 to file your tax return.
The status will be available for you to check within 24 hours of submitting electronically or 4 weeks after filing by paper.
Over 90% of refunds are issued within 21 days of the return being processed, according to the IRS.
This year there is still the possibility of you seeing a late refund after all the issues the IRS has faced.
Tax Topic 152 explained
If you check your refund with the Where’s My Refund tool, you may see Tax Topic 152 come up.
This is a generic reference code according to AS.
Your return is being processed and not yet approved or rejected.
No action is needed if you see this code but it may mean your return will take longer.
IRS shares returns may end up taking longer this year
While the IRS has set the goal of returning closer to normal with their deadlines, they still expect some delays.
Many that filed early this year can expect their returns by at least March 1.
Anyone who claimed the child tax or earned income credit will have to wait until March regardless of filing date.
This is because there are laws preventing refunds with those credits from going out before mid-Feb.
This helps deter fraud.
