Gov. Hochul announces federal support for upstate hospitals

Governor Kathy Hochul announced on Monday, January 31 that additional resources from the federal government will arrive to New York State as early as February 7, 2022.

According to a press release from the Governor’s Office, the assistance will benefit hospitals during the COVID-19 winter surge, providing relief to the over stressed hospital staff and system.

Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester and SUNY Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse will both receive assistance from two U.S. Department of Defense Military Medical Teams (MMT) starting in February. SUNY Upstate was previously supported by MMT until January 26.

The teams will have about 20 members each, including physicians, nurses, respiratory technicians and command staff. The MMTs will be mobilized for approximately 30 days. Hochul also announced a 30-day extension of MMT assistance for Erie County Medical Center.
