Scammer claiming to be member of Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office leadership team

Cayuga County Sheriff Brian Schenck is warning of a scam that has been circulating over the last several days and weeks.

He says his office has received several tips that a person has been calling local residents- calling themselves “Lieutenant Smith” and claiming to be associated with the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office.

The scam then involves him stating there’s a warrant out for the person’s arrest- and demands money in gift cards or directs them to meet with him to take care of it.

Sheriff Schenck says this is a scam- and to not act on a call like this one.

Anyone who receives a suspicious call like this one should call 315-253-1222.
