Newark mom arrested after kids miss nearly 40 days of school

A Newark mother whose children missed too much school is now facing criminal charges.

Chantel Kemble, 40, has two children in the Newark Central School District. Last month, police arrested at her at her home on East Union Street after they said her 10-year-old and 12-year-old children missed more than 30 days of school between September 5, 2018 and April 29, 2019.

Rachael Danson is her neighbor.

“From what I understand, there’s been a lot of issues with the boyfriend,” Danson said. “Then with the kids not going to school, it’s been a lot of just not being able to get up and take the kids, or if they missed the bus, or the kids just don’t want to listen to mom, which is normal.”

Kids are required by law to get an adequate education. If a student misses 18 or more days of school in a year, it’s known as chronic absence.

In Kemble’s case, police said one of her kids had 35 unexcused absences and the other child had 37. They missed 20 percent of the school year.
