Ithaca officials are seeking funding for a renovation of the city’s aging water and sewer building that could cost more than $12.3 million, according to The Ithaca Voice.
Assistant Superintendent Scott Gibson told Common Council that the 1932 building at 510 First St. has asbestos, outdated utilities and accessibility problems.
The division has $9.45 million available in reserves, with officials describing a roughly $3 million funding gap for the city to cover.
Mayor Rob Cantelmo supported the project, which would expand the building and make it primarily office space.
If approved through the budget process, the work could go out to bid in December, begin in March 2027 and finish in June 2028, with employees temporarily working from trailers at the former Bowl-O-Drome site.
