A free environmental documentary screening event billed as a five-year examination of buried toxic material is set for Aug. 5 at the Ohmann Theatre in Lyons.
The one-night event for "The Sludge War" will begin with a red-carpet welcome at 5 p.m., followed by the 80-minute film at 6 p.m. and a question-and-answer session with director Galassia Grassetto and invited guests.
According to the filmmakers, the documentary began with one woman's search for answers after learning her community had been built on a toxic substance. The project expanded into a broader examination using depositions, interviews with insiders and testimony from scientists, the release said.
The post-screening discussion is expected to include a Cornell University professor and representatives from the Town of Butler in Wayne County. Organizers said the Butler representatives will discuss their community's experience opposing the processing of the material featured in the film and what other communities can do to protect themselves.
The Ohmann Theatre is in Lyons. Reservations are available through the documentary's website.
