San Diego Comic-Con is absolutely legendary for its wild, jaw-dropping surprises, but this year, one of the most unbelievable moments didn’t even happen on a crowded convention stage. Hollywood veteran Johnny Depp left fans rubbing their eyes in total disbelief when he showed up completely unannounced on the sunny streets of San Diego. He wasn’t just walking around as himself, either. He was fully decked out and in character as the famously grumpy Ebenezer Scrooge, giving everyone a massive shock that quickly went viral across social media.
A Classic “Bah, Humbug” in the Gaslamp Quarter
The epic street stunt was a brilliant piece of guerrilla marketing for his upcoming, highly anticipated horror-fantasy film, Ebenezer. Instead of a traditional, boring press conference, Depp stepped out of a fake, snow-covered storefront marked “Scrooge and Marley” right in the middle of downtown San Diego’s bustling Gaslamp Quarter.
He was practically unrecognizable at first glance. Dressed in a heavy facial prosthetic, a thick vintage overcoat and a battered top hat, Depp fully committed to Scrooge’s miserable, signature scowl, totally transforming himself for the unexpected role. Fans arrived, excitedly pulling out their phones and shouting “Merry Christmas,” and the legendary actor hilariously stayed in character to chastise the swelling crowd.
He scoffed at the audience, sarcastically demanding to know if any of them had jobs or why they had so much spare time to just stand around staring at him. The crowd, of course, absolutely ate it up, roaring with genuine laughter. Before shuffling back into the fake storefront, he hit them with a perfect, classic sign-off, calling them all very strange people and shouting a loud, echoing “Humbug!” before disappearing.
Unveiling a Darker Christmas Tale
After having his fun terrorizing the streets, Depp finally made his way into the massive, packed Hall H. He surprised the ecstatic crowd at the end of a panel to officially drop the very first full-length trailer for Ebenezer. Produced by Paramount Pictures and directed by acclaimed horror filmmaker Ti West, this certainly isn’t your warm and fuzzy childhood Christmas movie.
The film promises a chilling, horror-infused twist on Charles Dickens’ classic 1843 story, A Christmas Carol. The movie follows the miserly Scrooge on a genuinely terrifying, dark supernatural journey as he faces the ghosts of the Past, Present, and Yet to Come. Paramount is teasing the fresh take with the perfect tagline: “The name you know. The story you don’t.”
It also boasts an absolutely incredible supporting cast to back up Depp’s performance. Fans can expect to see acting legend Sir Ian McKellen playing Jacob Marley, Rupert Grint as Bob Cratchit, and Daisy Ridley taking on the spooky role of the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come.
