United Way opens capacity-building grant applications for regional nonprofits

United Way of Greater Rochester and the Finger Lakes has opened applications for one-time grants aimed at strengthening nonprofit operations across a six-county region that includes Ontario and Wayne counties.

Health and human service nonprofits may apply for the Creating Synergy for a Stronger Future Grant through noon Aug. 13, with funding decisions expected in November.

Eligible organizations must serve Genesee, Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, Wayne or Wyoming counties, have federal nonprofit status effective Jan. 1, 2025, or earlier, and be current with state Charities Bureau and federal tax filings.

The grants can support technology and systems upgrades, leadership and board development, organizational development, strategic planning, mergers and affiliations. Full eligibility and evaluation requirements are included in the program's application guide.

United Way awarded more than $1.06 million to 26 organizations through the program last year. It received 135 requests totaling more than $9 million, the organization said.

Robert De Leon, United Way's vice president of impact, said the grants are intended to help nonprofits strengthen internal systems that are often deferred while organizations focus resources on direct services.

Application information is available through United Way of Greater Rochester and the Finger Lakes' website.
