NSF selects Rochester and Finger Lakes for  million laser innovation hub

The Rochester, Finger Lakes and Southern Tier regions will receive $31 million in combined federal and state support to launch a national laser technology and innovation hub led by the University of Rochester.

The National Science Foundation will provide $15 million over two years for the NSF STELLAR Engine, while New York state will contribute $16 million over six years, according to the university.

The funding will support the establishment of a national hub for laser science and development across the three regions.

Organizers plan to build an internationally competitive technology and innovation cluster focused on laser technologies, education, business expansion and attraction, manufacturing and workforce development.

The University of Rochester will lead the effort in the Rochester and Finger Lakes region. The university said the federal and state investments are intended to strengthen the region's role in laser research, development and commercialization.
