The Onondaga Lake Conservation Corps will host a 2-mile kayaking event Wednesday, August 12, along Ninemile Creek and Onondaga Lake to highlight restored habitats, birds and other wildlife.
The paddle is scheduled for 6 to 8 in the evening, launching from the Honeywell Canoe and Kayak Boat Launch on Pumphouse Road in Syracuse.
Organizers said birding and habitat experts from the National Audubon Society, Montezuma Audubon Center and Parsons will discuss how enhanced wetlands along the lakeshore are supporting the Onondaga Lake watershed. They will also discuss the lake's value as an Important Bird Area.
Onondaga Lake is an important stopover area for migratory shorebirds, songbirds and birds of prey, according to the release.
The event will take place rain or shine. Space is limited, and registration is required.
A limited number of solo kayaks will be available to rent on a first-come, first-served basis. Participants may also bring their own nonmotorized personal watercraft, and paddle boarders are welcome.
The fee is $25 per person without a boat rental and $35 per person with a solo kayak rental. Rentals include a boat, paddle and life vest.
Online reservations are available through Audubon. A map of the launch site will be emailed to participants after they register.
The program is sponsored by Honeywell, Parsons and Anchor QEA. Questions can be directed to 315-365-3588 or montezuma@audubon.org.
