Bouwens started with the DPW in 2012 as a heavy equipment operator. He holds a Grade D water operator certification and has been designated by the village as the water operator in responsible charge for Newark's water distribution system.

Officials said Bouwens has worked across all areas of the DPW but spends most of his time on water and sewer maintenance. In his new role, he will oversee the village's cross-connection control and backflow prevention program, along with other DPW duties.

Bouwens lives in Newark with his wife, Gretchen, and children, Hudson and Lincoln.

"We are pleased that Matt has accepted the position of Working Foreman," Mayor Jonathan Taylor said. "His historical knowledge and wide range of experience within the DPW will be of great benefit in his new leadership role."
