A Naples man was killed and several other people were injured Wednesday afternoon in a three-vehicle crash on County Road 12 in the town of Naples, according to the Ontario County Sheriff's Office.
Deputies said Brian P. Johnson, 71, of Naples, was pronounced dead at the scene after a northbound SUV crossed into the oncoming lane and struck his pickup head-on.
The crash was reported around 3:42 p.m. July 1. Deputies said 911 callers reported three vehicles involved, including one that had rolled over, people trapped and at least one vehicle on fire.
Investigators said Morgan R. Gliedman, 40, of Cohocton, was driving north on County Road 12 in a gray 2025 Nissan Pathfinder with two children, ages 6 and 8 months. Johnson was driving south in a 1991 Chevy 3500 dually pickup with his wife, Sharon L. Johnson, 71, their two dogs and a fifth-wheel camper, deputies said.
Luke R. Spara, 34, of Fairport, was driving south behind the Johnsons in a white 2023 GMC Terrain, according to the sheriff's office.
Deputies said Gliedman's SUV abruptly swerved into the oncoming lane and hit Johnson's pickup head-on. Spara was unable to stop and crashed into the rear of the camper, deputies said.
The collision pushed Gliedman's vehicle back and caused it to overturn. Deputies said Spara, who sustained minor injuries, got out of his vehicle and helped pull Gliedman and the two children from the SUV as it caught fire. An uninvolved motorist who stopped to help removed Sharon Johnson from the truck.
Both the pickup and the Pathfinder became fully engulfed in flames, deputies said. Johnson's two dogs also died in the crash.
Gliedman was flown by Mercy Flight to Strong Memorial Hospital, where she was in critical condition in the intensive care unit, according to the release. Deputies said the two children had very minor injuries and were expected to be fine, while Sharon Johnson was taken to Strong Memorial with leg fractures and was expected to recover.
Naples and Bristol fire departments, Naples and Canandaigua EMS, the Ontario County Sheriff's Crime Scene Unit and Drone Team, the Ontario County Coroner's Office, County Attorney's Office, Office of Emergency Management, chaplains and the Humane Society responded. Dave's Towing and Ricci's Towing assisted with vehicle removal.
