A talented group of first-round prospects was ushered into the NFL with the 2026 NFL draft, and the early part of the off-season has given fans a glimpse of what these rookies may have in store for their new teams. The coaches have already been able to see how quickly each player is picking up the pro game in the organized team activities and mandatory minicamps, and training camp hasn’t even started yet. All first-round picks have either been a heralded quarterback, a dynamic edge rusher or a versatile offensive lineman and all have made giant strides in preparing for the upcoming season. Here are the biggest storylines heading into the 2026 NFL rookie class.
Which First-Round Rookies Have Been the Biggest Standouts?
Some of the first-rounders wasted no time in making a good first impression. Las Vegas Raiders are praising quarterback Fernando Mendoza for his leadership, work ethic and ability to quickly digest defenses, even as the team is letting him develop behind veteran Kirk Cousins.
Carnel Tate has impressed with his route running and sure hands in OTAs for the Tennessee Titans. Dallas Cowboys safety Caleb Downs has slid into multiple positions on defence with ease and Arizona Cardinals running back Jeremiyah Love has been praised by teammates for his athleticism and patience even while practicing without pads. And in the regular season, these early glimpses are leading to a pair of rookies who could be ready to contribute immediately.
Which Players Are Competing for Starting Jobs?
There are already a lot of first round picks fighting for significant playing time. Cleveland Browns offensive tackle Spencer Fano is taking plenty of reps with the first-team offense and is well on his way to becoming the team’s starter. Baltimore Ravens guard Olaivavega Ioane has been a consistent starter and Detroit Lions tackle Blake Miller is waiting for his opportunity to start at right tackle. Other players such as Panthers tackle Monroe Freeling and Dolphins offensive lineman Kadyn Proctor also have received valuable reps with the first team, putting themselves in position to possibly earn starting jobs before Week 1.
Which Rookies Are Managing Injuries or Development?
Not all the Rookies had a full offseason. Chiefs CB Mansoor Delane (shoulder) is out of mandatory minicamp, and Jets TE Kenyon Sadiq (hernia) is rehabbing from surgery. Vikings DT Caleb Banks still recovering from foot surgery but should be ready for training camp. Saints receiver Jordyn Tyson has been limited in practice as he works his way back from rehab. Eagles WR Makai Lemon missed minicamp with a hamstring injury. Most of these setbacks are thought to be minor and teams are hopeful of their availability later this summer, thankfully.
What Can Fans Expect Before the Regular Season?
Every first round pick will get their first test in camp. The battle for starting jobs at receiver and defensive back will continue, but with pads on, coaches will be able to better evaluate offensive and defensive linemen and quarterbacks. Some rookies will make an instant impact, while others will develop behind veteran players before getting bigger opportunities. The 2026 NFL Draft class is full of talent and now fans will get to see them in live NFL action with the start of preseason games
Every organization spends Invests heavily on their first round picks so the next few weeks will be critical in finding out which rookies are ready to make an instant impact and which players need a little more time to come into their own.
