New York reactivates harmful algae reporting system

As harmful algal bloom season approaches in the Finger Lakes, New York has reopened its public reporting system, according to the Finger Lakes Times. Residents can now submit bloom sightings directly to state officials through a mobile-friendly online platform.

The New York Harmful Algal Bloom System allows the public to report suspected blooms, which are then reviewed by the Department of Environmental Conservation and Department of Health. Confirmed reports are added to an interactive map showing current and past bloom locations statewide.

Warm temperatures, calm water, and excess nutrients often fuel harmful algal blooms, which typically become more common in August and September. State officials are encouraging residents to report sightings to help track blooms and protect people, pets, and local waterways.
