Seneca Falls Canal Fest plans community parade for America’s 250th anniversary

Seneca Falls will mark America’s 250th anniversary this summer with a community parade planned as part of the return of Canal Fest along the Cayuga-Seneca Canal waterfront.

Organizers say the parade will step off at 5 p.m. on Sunday, July 5, along Fall Street and is intended to bring together local organizations, businesses, schools, civic groups, families and residents for a large-scale patriotic celebration tied to the national semiquincentennial.

Participants are encouraged to join the parade by walking in costume, performing, driving decorated vehicles or creating floats highlighting patriotism and community pride. Organizers said float entries registered by June 15 will be eligible for a $100 gift card contest prize.

Canal Fest is scheduled for July 3 through July 5 and will include live music, food vendors, fireworks, family activities and the annual community duck race. The event returns during the Fourth of July holiday weekend, giving organizers an opportunity to combine the longtime local festival with celebrations surrounding the nation’s 250th anniversary.

“Canal Fest has always been about bringing the community together and celebrating the history and spirit of Seneca Falls,” organizers said in the announcement. “This year gives us the opportunity to not only celebrate the canal and our community, but also to honor America’s 250th anniversary in a fun and memorable way.”

Additional parade registration information and contest rules are available through Seneca Falls Canal Fest organizers.
