Ithaca energy plan hits pause

Ithaca’s plan to bypass traditional utility companies and buy energy on the open market has stalled before launch, according to The Ithaca Voice, as state regulators review similar programs across New York.

The city’s community choice aggregation program, known as T-GEN, was supposed to start this fall and would have allowed a third-party group to purchase electricity and natural gas for residents instead of going through New York State Electric & Gas directly. But state regulators paused electric CCA programs statewide while evaluating whether their opt-out enrollment model serves consumers.

City officials say the uncertainty has scared off energy suppliers and forced Ithaca to restart public outreach efforts under tougher state rules. While T-GEN remains in limbo, the city’s separate green energy incentive program, Own Your Power, is still moving forward.
