Cayuga County pays inmate $25K

A Cayuga County Jail inmate who claimed staff ignored repeated requests for medical and mental health care will receive $25,000 in a settlement, according to The Citizen.

Johann Bass sued Cayuga County and several jail officials in federal court after alleging delayed treatment for chest pain and a lack of mental health services during his 16-month stay at the jail. Bass also claimed the county violated his due process rights during disciplinary proceedings.

Bass originally sought more than $2.1 million in damages. County lawmakers approved the settlement in April, and the agreement includes no admission of wrongdoing. Bass, who served prison time for a 2022 Auburn bank robbery, was released on parole last year.
