Steuben County woman charged after more than 30 neglected animals found, deputies say

A Cohocton woman is facing dozens of animal cruelty charges after investigators say more than 30 animals were discovered living in poor conditions during a search of her property last month.

Steuben County Sheriff Jim Allard said investigators and deputies arrested 54-year-old Sheri L. King on May 18 following an animal neglect investigation tied to a residence on Hillside Lane in Cohocton.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, authorities executed a search warrant at the property on April 24 and found more than 30 animals in varying states of malnourishment and maltreatment. Investigators allege King failed over time to properly house, feed, or provide water to the animals, resulting in serious health issues affecting multiple dogs.

All of the animals were removed from the property by the Finger Lakes SPCA and Hornell Humane Society for treatment and care.

King was charged with 34 counts of overdriving, torturing and injuring animals, along with failure to provide proper sustenance. She was released with an appearance ticket and is scheduled to answer the charges in Avoca Town Court.

The Sheriff’s Office also credited the Finger Lakes SPCA, Hornell Humane Society, Bath Veterinary Hospital, Avoca Town Code Enforcement, and Avoca Town Dog Control for assisting in the investigation.
