Looking to add a new companion to your home?
Each week, FingerLakes1.com partners with the Humane Society of Yates County to spotlight local animals searching for permanent homes. This week’s featured pets include a sweet, affectionate cat with extra toes and a well-mannered dog who’s been waiting longer than expected for the right fit.

Nola
At just 3 years old, Nola is the kind of cat shelter staff can’t believe is still waiting for a home. This friendly feline gets along well with other cats and has a calm, affectionate personality that quickly wins people over. She’s also polydactyl, meaning she has extra toes — something staff say only adds to her charm, especially when paired with her “adorable toe beans.”
Nola is FIV positive, but shelter staff say that shouldn’t scare potential adopters away. Because FIV is primarily spread through deep bite wounds and not normal day-to-day interaction, she can still safely live with other cats in the right environment. More than anything, Nola is looking for a loving home where her sweet personality can shine.
Leo
Leo is a roughly 4-year-old dog with good manners and an affectionate personality that staff say makes it easy to fall for him. Despite being described as incredibly sweet, he has spent longer at the shelter than expected while waiting for the right home.
While Leo does well with people, he would do best in a home without small animals or young children. Shelter staff say he simply isn’t a fan of small, fast-moving things, but he shows no aggression toward humans. For someone looking for a loyal companion with a gentle side, Leo could be the perfect match.
