Bath police charge parents after infant death investigation

Two Village of Bath residents have been charged following an investigation into the death of a 12-day-old infant earlier this year, according to the Village of Bath Police Department.

Police said officers and emergency responders were called around 8 a.m. March 18 to a home on May Street in Bath for a report of an unresponsive infant. Officers from the Bath Police Department and the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office administered CPR before the child was transported by ambulance to Ira Davenport Memorial Hospital, where the infant was pronounced dead.

Investigators later determined the infant’s death resulted from negligence involving unsafe sleeping arrangements, according to police.

Authorities said 27-year-old Dakota J. Abeel and 23-year-old Jessica A. Abeel, both of Bath, were each charged with one count of criminally negligent homicide, a Class E felony.

Both were processed and released with orders to appear in Bath Village Court at a later date.

Police said multiple agencies assisted during the investigation, including the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office, Steuben County 911, the Steuben County District Attorney’s Office, Bath Ambulance, Steuben County Child Protective Services and Steuben County EMS.
