Macedon police remind residents of New York laws for e-bikes, scooters and golf carts

As warmer weather returns and more residents head outdoors, the Macedon Police Department is reminding the public about New York’s rules governing e-bikes, e-scooters and golf carts.

Police shared the guidance this week as the use of electric bikes and scooters continues to grow across communities during the spring and summer months.

Under New York law, operators of e-bikes and e-scooters must be at least 16 years old. Riders ages 16 and 17 are also required to wear helmets.

Police said e-bikes and e-scooters are not permitted on sidewalks and may only be operated on roads with posted speed limits of 30 mph or lower. They are prohibited on roads posted at 35 mph or higher.

State law also limits the maximum speed of Class 1 and Class 2 e-bikes to 20 mph, while e-scooters cannot exceed 15 mph. Class 3 e-bikes are not permitted anywhere in New York outside of New York City.

Officials reminded riders they must obey all traffic laws, including stop signs and yield signs, travel in the same direction as traffic, and use headlights and taillights when operating at night.

E-scooters are also prohibited from carrying passengers.

Police said parents or guardians of children under 16 found operating e-bikes or e-scooters could face tickets and fines.

The department also emphasized that golf carts are not allowed on public roads or sidewalks and are restricted to private property use only.

“Please ride responsibly and help keep our community safe,” the department said in its public notice.
