Cayuga County jail inmate charged after deputies allegedly find cocaine in possession

An incarcerated woman at the Cayuga County Jail faces additional criminal charges after deputies said she was found with cocaine inside the facility last month.

Cayuga County Sheriff Brian Schenck said jail deputies discovered Heidi J. Kesel, 32, in possession of a small bag containing a white chunk substance on April 29 inside the Cayuga County Jail.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the substance was tested and allegedly came back positive for cocaine.

Deputies charged Kesel on May 6 with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and second-degree promoting prison contraband, both Class A misdemeanors.

Authorities said Kesel remains in custody at the Cayuga County Jail on unrelated charges.

The Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office said anyone with information related to the incident is encouraged to contact investigators or submit anonymous tips through the county’s SaferWatch system.
