Livingston County seeks public input on bridge replacement project in Portage

Livingston County officials are asking residents to weigh in on a planned bridge replacement project that will bring a long-term fix to aging infrastructure in the Town of Portage.

The county Highway Department is collecting public comments on a proposal to replace the Cheese Factory Road Bridge over Keshequa Creek, a structure officials say has existing structural deficiencies.

Plans call for removing the current steel plate arch and constructing a new bridge designed to last at least 75 years. The project would also improve water flow, add scour protection, and enhance overall safety, including wider shoulders for vehicles.

Construction is expected to begin in April 2027 and wrap up by November of that year, with an estimated total cost of $2.7 million. Livingston County would be responsible for a 5% local share of the project.

During construction, the bridge will be closed to through traffic, with a posted 6.5-mile detour using Baker Road, Old State Road, and State Street.

County officials are accepting public feedback through June 1, with multiple options available for residents to submit comments, including online, by email, phone, fax, or mail.
