Auburn man charged with welfare fraud, released after arraignment

An Auburn man is facing multiple felony charges after authorities say he fraudulently received public assistance benefits.

Herbert W. Edwards IV, 33, was arrested April 20 on an outstanding welfare fraud warrant issued by Auburn City Court, according to the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies charged Edwards with fourth-degree welfare fraud, fourth-degree grand larceny, and misuse of food stamps, all class E felonies. Investigators allege the charges stem from a case handled by the Cayuga County Department of Social Services Case Integrity Unit in coordination with the sheriff’s office and district attorney’s office.

Edwards was arraigned in Auburn City Court and released on his own recognizance.
